For the few people who have not realised it yet, I am crazy. Totally. Therefore, you should not be surprised to hear that Bestia has a new black carpet.

Bestia (“the Beast”) is my new computer. I built it with data safety in mind, after I nearly lost all of my data because of my old hard drive having some trouble. I don’t want to make it too technical, but let’s just say that I now have 3 hard drives for redundancy (geeks like me call it RAID, redundant array of inexpensive disks – “inexpensive” my @$$!). And of course, I changed CPU, motherboard, RAM, graphics card… And I bought a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), just to be sure you folks can always see my site (just kidding… The real reason is avoiding power spikes, also for data safety).

Heart of Bestia

After this adventure (I’m skipping the software installation odyssey, if someone is interested, let me know) I found out that my new Bestia was LOUD! Why, how can it be? …Wait, remember the 3 hard drives? I found out, amazingly, that 3 hard drives are noisier than one! Therefore, some extra money had to go into Bestia. Starting to compare it (him?) to the flesh-eating plant of the Little Shop of Horrors, I gave him some blood… er, no, some new fans designed for silence at the Austrian Institute for Heat-Transmission and Fan Technology (I’m serious! But maybe the fan company was not…), and a black carpet: actually a noise insulator for case walls. If you ever think of buying this stuff, be warned: it works poorly. The fans are great, though… Thanks for the hint, Luca!

Temperatures and fan speedsThe picture on the top shows the end result. The most tedious part was putting the cables in a tidy manner, so that air could nicely flow around them. Quite pleased with the low temperatures and RPM values (here on the right), I closed everything, mentally apologising with you bloggers for the couple of hours my computer had to be off-line. I can still hear the hard drives roaring, but it’s less annoying.

Moral: if you don’t want to hear your computer running, go out to the beach and listen to the wind (like we did after the famous Hawaiian party…)
